On a walking tour of Amsterdam prior to departing on our Rhine River cruise, our tour guide's first comments warned us to always remain aware of the bicycles. She said that the population of Amsterdam was about 1 million 0 and 3 million bikes. Crossing any street in the city also required crossing bike lanes and while there are marked pedestrian crossings where you would expect pedestrian right-of-way, that concept is a mere suggestion to the cyclists of the city. We had some very harrowing experiences crossing the streets! Not all the bikes in Amsterdam were dangerous, though. Throughout our wanderings in the city we came across numerous bikes bedecked with flowers and other decorations on display including this one near the Anne Frank House.
