Viking Ocean Cruise Ship Orion - We took a fascinating walking tour in Christchurch, which is still in the process of recovering from a devastating earthquake that occurred in 2011. By the time of our visit, many of the most important structures that were destroyed or severely damaged have been reconstructed / restored, including those on the city's university campus and local business. However, there still remain empty spaces around the city where there formerly were buildings prior to the earthquake. Then there is the Ōtākaro/Avon River that winds through the central business district of the city which is a source of recreation for walkers and boaters. The river is also the home for the long fin eels that are native to New Zealand. Our tour guide, a Christchurch resident, was able to get us a glimpse of the friendly blue-eyed eels simply by splashing here hand on the surface of the water.
